Welfare Bill: an abuse of privilege

Monday, February 6th, 2012

The government has reversed its House of Lords defeats on the Welfare Reform Bill by reaching for an archaic convention on ‘financial privilege’. It’s a very dangerous precedent

When I wrote my last blog, after the third of seven defeats in the House of Lords for the Welfare Reform Bill, I was – I admit – feeling buoyant. The media narrative around disability and scrounging seemed to be turning, the wider public were actually starting to scrutinise the implications, and the Lords started to oppose many of the proposals that came before them.

Don’t let the government cheat with the Welfare Reform Bill

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

Don’t let the government cheat by calling the welfare bill a finance bill so they can reverse all the hard won Lords amendments.

Sign Pat’s Petition here  – to tell MPs they can’t do this.  Tell every one else to sign today.

Write to the Speaker John Bercow and ask him not to authorise this misuse of procedure in closing the debate down in the Lords.
