The storm continues to rage around us

Monday, July 30th, 2012

These are challenging times for everyone, but especially for disabled people and carers. Cuts to benefits and services are coming our way from all directions creating the perfect storm.

Yet when we ask the DWP to carry out a Cumulative Impact Assessment of all these changes taken together Ms Miller refuses on the grounds it is too difficult and prefers to sit back and wait for the car crash. This just isn’t good enough. All new medicines, bridges, and vehicles have to be road-tested.

So how can they go ahead and conduct a live experiment on disabled people and carers without any estimates of what they are doing?

We all need to fight this together. Pat’s Petition needs your signatures. The petition could trigger government debate if we can achieve 100,000 signatures. If we all work together on this, 100,000 signatures for Pat’s Petition should be easily achievable. Because of the 40,000 signatures we have already the government is asking us to plan for a debate but we don’t have much time left to get the remaining signatures.

Dear Mrs Pat Onions

Looks like your e-petition “Stop and review the cuts to benefits and services which are falling disproportionately on disabled people, their carers and families” is gaining momentum.

If you do get to 100,000 signatures you will need an MP to support a debate.  You can find your local MP at You can find more information about how the House of Commons deals with e-petitions on the Backbench Business Committee website at  If you need any more information, you can contact us at Thanks, HM Government e-petitions

Please help us now.

It’s desperately important that we show the government the strength we have if we work together. Pat’s Petition has brought together a group of independent disability organisations, academics and charities to carry out our own Cumulative Impact Assessment for disability – CIA-D. While we continue to press the government to carry out their own assessment of the changes, we are starting to gather evidence ourselves. It is still at an early stage but we hope to collect information for campaigners and journalists to show the cumulative impact of all these changes.

In the meantime please go out and get the signatures for Pat’s Petition.

All for one and one for all.

Together we can do this.

Will today come to represent a day in British history on Welfare Reform

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

For centuries history books have recorded many battles, and yet for us none can be as important as the one we face today.

The Welfare reform Bill  is nearing its final stages in the Lords and it has been extraordinary these last few months seeing everyone come together to highlight opposition to the bill.

Last night we learned that Baroness Grey Thompson will table a new amendment asking for a pilot scheme to be put in place ahead of any changes made to Disability Living Allowance. Clause 80 can be read here

For those wanting to watch the proceedings you can do so here  ( approx 3pm )

Voices are being raised daily,  saying Coalition must think again regarding these proposed changes to disability benefits.

To date 21,489 people have signed the petition I submitted on the governments website.

If you have not already done so I ask that you join us by signing here

Share with  family, friends, contacts, groups and tell them to do the same.

This could be Welfares last stand,  and it is one for which we need a united front.

This morning the Candle of Hope still shines brightly and with members in the House of Lords battling on our behalf,  long may it stay lit.

Last but not least, keep a watchful eye on our backdoors.

With all the coverage re Disability Benefits, we need ensure nothing untoward is being rushed through by stealth. There are so many proposals, many that will affect our lives, and it is vital we do not take our eye off the ball so to speak.

Any possible reprieve today will be a great victory for everyone but the war itself will not be won. Our campaigning will need continue.

Opposition to Benefit Reform Kept Hidden by the Government

Monday, January 9th, 2012

The authors of a new report, Responsible Reform, published today have studied the submissions to the DLA consultation and reveal evidence that the consultation for DLA did not meet the Government’s own Code of Practice. They also reveal that only 7% of the respondents to the consultation, supported it fully. Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, produced one of over 450 responses, detailing objections to the proposed changes. Yet the government didn’t publish the submissions and went ahead any way.

You can find full details on Sue Marshs’ blog here  and Kaliya Franklins blog plus Guardian article here

Pat Onions of Pat’s Petition  supports this report and says –

“there has been a wall of silence from all the political parties over the way disabled people, those with ill health and their carers, are being treated. I am delighted that Boris has had the courage to break with the others and stand up and speak up.”

She continued

“Community groups have been suspicious of consultations for years. We have always had a gut reaction that they make their minds up before these consultations. This report shows we were right.”

Pat described her worry that there are further threats to disabled people and carers,

“All the cuts and changes coming together have made a perfect storm. Disability Living Allowance is one part of this and the report authors are quite right to ask for a pause, to think it out properly, before visiting it on vulnerable people. This is exactly what is asked for in my petition”

Dear Santa – from Pat Onions (Pat’s Petition)

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

Dear Santa,

I know how busy you are but I have a few ideas I want to run past you. OK?

They’re all to do with Pat’s petition – yeah I thought that was a great idea too. Told all my friends who told their friends and they all signed my petition. Brilliant. That’s what I needed.

I asked some nice people at lots of the charities too. They were well impressed and passed it around on someat called Twitter and put the petition on their sites. That was good and gave the petition publicity but I need more signatures – lots more. Time is against me.

One of my helpers, you call yours Elves don’t you Santa? I like that. Anyway one of my helpers said I should ask some of the Voluntary sector people. They came good and you know what? The numbers shot right up. I could hear the countometer thingy going whoosh it was amazing. Well pleased I was too.

I found little pockets of people in even littler places all wanting to help. It was amazing.

Do you know Santa what was specially magical for me? What can be more fitting at Christmas than some Holy men sending their blessings to us? Even more special is one very very important Holy man who is praying for all of us.

Thank you to them all.

I know you’re very busy Santa but can you help me a little more? Will you tell all these ever so nice people, who made that counter thing go so high, that I will be back in January? Gonna ask again for their help to get right up to them 10’s of thousands. Tell them that time is running out for all of us and ignoring me is not an option.

Will you be sure and tell them I need their votes please Santa?

I’m gonna fight on for all those disabled people, all them carers and their families who love them.

Thank you.

The Quiet Terror

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

From Pat

“An event occurred that altered human life. It has blinded virtually everyone and rendered human kind helpless.”

Powerful words about a science fiction book written 60 years ago. The event which happened was known in the book as the ‘quiet terror.’

It is powerful enough to make Pat’s petition even more determined to continue its message against the tyranny of the government.

The book may be fiction but there is nothing fictitious about the cruel reality of what we are facing. Each day another horror story comes to light  -  mercilessly trying to crush the very life out of us.

Pat’s petition grows which gives me enormous encouragement to drive it ever onwards and upwards. To get so much support from people signing is amazing as they have come from all walks of life. Daily emails and ‘phone calls show the strength of feelings against these cuts. Stories of untold misery at this time of year.

In a little over 2 weeks it will be Christmas. A time of joy, happiness and giving to others. For those disabled people , their carers and families there will be little joy or happiness but they will still give. They will invent ways, if they have to, to reach out to each other and spread the words of Pat’s petition. Every one of their signatures will bring that 100,000 closer.

The ‘team’ has continued to give their time and energy into campaigning our message. To them, and all who have signed and will do so in the future – I thank you one and all.

Where injustice becomes law – resistance becomes necessary.

Bishop of Oxford helps raise awareness of Pat’s Petition

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

Dear Mrs ******,

Thank you very much for drawing my attention to Pat’s Petition.  I am drawing it to the attention of 1500 church leaders who receive a weekly email bulletin from Oxford Diocese and I hope there might be some real response from that quarter.  You are right that a society must be judged by the way it treats its most vulnerable members.

With all good wishes

Yours sincerely

Why should we all support Pat’s Petition

Monday, November 28th, 2011

guest post

Why should we all be supporting  Pat’s Petiton?

The answer lies within ourselves, and depends on the future we want, not just for ourselves, our children, our country, but also our politics, especially our politics.

For some time now the word ‘politician’ is seen in such deragatory terms. There is no faith, trust, hope or belief among many of the public. They are under constant attack by ‘politicians’ who show no understanding of their daily lives.

Make no mistake, this is not reform of the benefit/social care systems but a contant persecution of many disabled people, carers and their families. If this was truly the ‘biggest shakeup’ of the welfare system in over 60 yrs, the level of Carers Allowance would have been addressed. Even after this so called ‘reform’, it will remain the LOWEST of all the benefits, when those in receipt are among those who contribute the most.

Is reform needed – Yes, but not cuts like is being brought forth, ones that are so fast, so deep, they will create a crisis far worse than any banking one. Without coming across as too dramatic the cost will be immense, but one paid with the loss of lives not money. By taking away money that enables many disabled people to retain their independence, to enable many of them to work, where can their extra costs be transferred to. Over stretched local authorities wont be able to pick these costs up.

Qualifying for disability benefits is extremely hard now, fraud rate is so minimal compared to other benefits, yet govt are targetting disabled people more than any other group. They allow, and also contribute to, the many ‘scrounger’ stories in media. This has to stop.

Each and every one of us has a duty to protect those unable to do so themselves.

For disabled people who are able to raise their voices, we must ensure our ears are open to their messages. Having taken part in 2 of the Hardest Hit protests this year, there can be no doubt of the message being relayed.

When you have grassroot groups forming alliances , when you have big groups/charities organising Hardest Hit events, when you have media articles daily all saying the same thing….STOP. Surely that tells you how wrong some of these policies are.

We know what Pat Onions  is doing. Now it remains to be seen….

Doing nothing is not an option
